“The perspective of this collection of poems is primarily that of a mother and her male recruit at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. There will be some references to a father, a female recruit, and some different perspectives as well. That said, if your recruit or parental situation is different than what is outlined herein, please apply yours accordingly.
As a veteran of the Marine Corps, and also a father of a Marine, I have written these poems from the viewpoint of being involved on the inside and then being on the sidelines waiting for the occasional, sometimes elusive, letter. Knowing the anxiety that some face waiting to hear something – anything – about what is going on in the transition from a youngster to a man or woman ready to fight for our nation, I hope to have captured the heart and mindset of those anxious moments.”
